The Ja Morant controversy keeps unraveling. The Memphis Grizzlies star is under NBA investigation and has been suspended by his team for bringing a gun into a nightclub in Denver. However, the controversy doesn’t end there because now Colorado Police have opened an investigation into the case. The scandal kicked off after an IG Live that Morant broadcasted to his followers from inside the club where he showed all the viewers that he had a gun in his hand.
The Glendale Police Department confirmed to ESPN that the incident took place at a “gentlemen’s club” called Shotgun Willie’s. The nightclub hasn’t responded to any inquiries on the matter.
The state of Colorado allows carrying guns in most private and public spaces, with a few notable exceptions like state property or under the influence. In the video posted by Morant, it’s possible to see people drinking around him, although it can’t be seen what they were drinking.
Police chief James Dillon told the Associated Press that the investigation started after the authorities heard that the incident took place while the Grizzlies player was in the city after a game against the Nuggets. NBA rules forbid players to carry firearms anywhere from the league facilities to the team plane, which is what the NBA’s independent investigation is trying to find out.
As the investigation continues, the Grizzlies have decided to suspend Morant indefinitely for at least two games, if the rule violation is confirmed, he could face a suspension of up to 50 games. From a legal standpoint, the police investigation could bring even more trouble for Morant, one of the league’s biggest rising stars at only 23 years old.
